Overview:

This 10-week course is designed to equip aspiring filmmakers with the skills necessary to confidently direct, shoot, and edit their own films. By the end of the course, participants will possess not only the technical skills required to produce their work but also the leadership qualities needed to manage a film set and see projects through from conception to completion.

This comprehensive program covers everything from basic filmmaking techniques to advanced storytelling strategies, aiming to transition ideas from your head onto both big and small screens.


Week 1: Introduction to Filmmaking / How to Shoot a Scene / How a film set works
● Delve into filmmaking fundamentals, including how to effectively block and shoot a
scene. Learn essential film set dynamics and the art of achieving the right coverage to tell a compelling story.

Week 2: Screenwriting Basics
● Explore the craft of screenwriting. Learn how to construct a screenplay that not only attracts talented actors and crew but also engages and captivates an audience.

Week 3: Shooting for the Edit
● Understand what separates amateur filmmakers from professionals by focusing on pre-planning your shots for a seamless editing process. This session will cover the essential footage needed to stitch your film together effectively.

Week 4: Cameras, Lenses, and Lighting Techniques

● Gain knowledge of camera technology, from mobile phones to cinema cameras with interchangeable lenses. Discover how different focal lengths and camera placements can enhance your narrative. Learn basic lighting techniques that can improve your scenes, even with limited resources like household lamps.

Week 5: Introduction to Editing with Davinci Resolve
● Get hands-on experience with Davinci Resolve, a leading editing (free) software used worldwide. From cutting a basic scene to implementing audio and color corrections, learn how to utilize this powerful tool to enhance your film’s quality.

Week 6: Dynamic Camera Movements
● Further your camera skills by learning how strategic camera  movements can add emotional depth and narrative power to your scenes.

Week 7: Mastering Subtext in Film
● Whether you’re directing, acting, or writing, understanding and utilizing subtext is crucial for adding layers of depth to your work. This week focuses on how to weave subtext into your scenes to make them more engaging and meaningful.

Week 8: Directing Documentaries
● Dive into documentary filmmaking. Learn how to uncover compelling real-life stories and translate them effectively onto screen. This genre’s growing appeal lies in its power to present real stories that resonate widely with audiences, regardless of celebrity involvement.

Week 9: Practicum – Shooting Short Projects
● Apply the skills you’ve acquired by collaborating in small groups to shoot short sketches, scenes, or films. This hands-on experience is designed to consolidate your learning and foster teamwork.

Week 10: Finalizing and Marketing Your Film Projects
● Complete your projects with final edits, color corrections, and sound design. Learn strategies to build buzz and effectively market your films. The course concludes with a screening, celebrating your hard work and newly acquired filmmaking prowes
